Recharges vs. Disbursements: VAT Explained!

In the UK, knowing when to charge VAT on expenses you pass to clients is essential! Here’s a quick guide:

🔹 Recharges: When you pay for goods or services that benefit your business and then pass these costs to your client, this is a recharge. VAT should be applied to these costs, as they are considered part of your service. Examples include travel expenses and professional fees.

🔹 Disbursements: When you pay for goods or services on behalf of your client directly (meaning they’re the end-user), this is a disbursement. VAT does not apply here, as you’re merely passing along a cost. Think of postage fees paid on behalf of the client.

Understanding the difference helps you stay VAT-compliant and avoid overcharging your clients!
